Everything counted as loss…

In Philippians 3, St. Paul writes: “Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Phil. 3:7-8)

Just before this, Paul talks about how he has been such a diligent follower of God’s Law, yet recognizes that all of his “law following” still is not able to gain him eternal life. Instead, it is all “counted as loss,” which is his way of saying that his actions are not the source of his salvation. Rather, the beauty of knowing Jesus and receiving the life that is given through His death and resurrection of is the only source of salvation. Even more, ALL things count as loss when compared to this gift of life because it is a GIFT — not to be repaid, not to be earned, not to be received as wages for any works. The gift of life from God in Christ Jesus is FREE — truly a gift. We can notice our own doings and try to consider them as repayment to the Lord, but none of our works will compare to the saving work of God through Christ Jesus.

And how amazing is God? Well, he receives that which we offer to him, though he doesn’t need anything, and then allows us to continue sharing his amazing gift: The gift of life in Jesus, the only gift that is growing even as it is shared.

Our God is an AWESOME God.

Peace, hope, and love in all ways and always,
Pastor G.
